University Economics by Armen Alchian is quite a good introductory textbook to the basics of mainstream economics. It has a strong emphasis on understanding economic concepts intuitively which I like. If you're looking for a more mathematical introduction, McAfee's open source book is a pretty good introduction to microeconomics and is available for free at http://www.introecon.com/
