The Beginning of Infinity by David Deutsch and The Three-Body Problem Trilogy by Liu Cixin. I especially recommend reading this combination. Both books fill up with optimism about humanity. First one by providing framework for infinite progress of humankind. (written by acknowledged quantum physics professor). Second one by by outlining how we can overcome difficulties on the way (written by talented Chinese science fiction writer).

Cryptonomicon and Snow Crash were great. Others you might: - The Story of Your Life by Ted Chiang (superb short story that Arrival was based on) - The Three Body-Problem (Cixin Liu) - Dune (Frank Herbert) - The Parable of the Sower (Octavia Butler) - Lucifer's Hammer (Larry Niven) - The Kundalini Equation (Steven Barnes)

The Three Body Problem.

The Three Body problem by Cixin Liu is very dense, but entertaining and has depth.

Just finished with the first two volumes of Cixin Liu's trilogy. Really good stuff. :)

Check out the excellent, and recently translated, Chinese scifi novel “The Three Body Problem”. Grimwood's “Replay” is a great time travel novel if you're into that.

For 22+ years I believed Foundation series by Issac Asimov was unparalleled, since first read when I was 10. It changed after the Three Body Problem, especially the 2nd and 3rd installments, The dark forest, The forever death. I don't expect to add more to the list in my life span.
