As luck would have it, my blog on Github pages is down. So here's the post describing the four in markdown. Tldr; Designing Data Intensive Applications, Effective Python, The Google SRE book, and High Performance Browser Networking. https://github.com/eatonphil/notes.eatonphil.com/blob/master... 1: Diaspora (Greg Egan). Brilliant sci-fi where computer science concepts like cellular automata, computation complexity etc are major plot points. Starts with a highly detailed explanation of AI personality creation. Super geeky and a brilliant plot. 2: High Performance Browser Networking. Really explained a lot of modern networking. I was already familiar with the basics of the OSI stack, but this explained a lot of newer ideas, optimizations, and HTTP2. Really comprehensive guide to how the internet works. 3: The Shock Doctrine (Naomi Klein): A history of how the CIA has shot down democratic regimes to enforce small-government-free-market policy in developing countries when these policies are rejected in polls. Explains a lot of the crises in Latin America and Russia.

Eloquent Javascript : A Modern Introduction to Programming by Marijn Haverbeke http://eloquentjavascript.net Imho, the first chapter is a must-read for anyone in the industry, even and maybe especially if not a developer. "When a program works, it is beautiful. The art of programming is the skill of controlling complexity. The great program is subdued, made simple in its complexity." ... and also, maybe not as "mindblowing" as Eloquent Javascript, but really good for diving deep in a low-level land (yet made very accessible in this book) that is probably overlooked by most of us when optimizing a web app for speed : High-Performance Browser Networking by Ilya Grigorik http://chimera.labs.oreilly.com/books/1230000000545/index.ht...
