Perhaps even better than the the other two.

Concepts, Techniques, and Models of Computer Programming is also a great book.
Agreed, he/she really needs to take a look at this book - https://www.info.ucl.ac.be/~pvr/book.html
That sounds to me like “Concepts, Techniques, and Models of Computer Programming”
Awesome! Specifically not on my list already there's: Concepts, Techniques, and Models of Computer Programming; Smalltalk-80: The language and its implementation; The Architecture of Symbolic Computers and Project Oberon: The design of an operating system and compiler. This reminds me Niklaus Wirth's Compiler Construction probably belongs in this thread.

1984 - because it was the first book in English that I read front to cover, with a dictionary by my side, and learned so much recurring essential vocabulary that after that effort I could read anything; by now I have read much more from the much larger pool of writings in English than in my mother language. And, of course, it made me look differently at so many things. Things Fall Appart - because it helped me understand how religions like Christianity and other initially subversive beliefs spread, and the sudden impact of Western culture on other cultures. Anthropology (Marvin Harris) - because it impacted the way I look at humanity, society and history, and also helped me understand that marxism is much more than an arguably failed political doctrine. The Bernstein Tapes about Critique of Pure Reason - I am still working through this, but has already impacted my conception of what knowledge is History of Western Philosophy (Bertrand Russel) - because it made me understand the interwining between ideas and history. A desert island book…

I am reading CTM by Van Roy/Haridi and watching Van Roy's edx vids. Very nice explanations that require a lot of filling in the holes. If someone else is familiar with Oz/Van Roy stuff, I have a question.
As part of the MOOC course Paradigms of Computer Programming (https://www.edx.org/course/louvainx/louvainx-louv1-01x-parad... (https://www.edx.org/course/louvainx/louvainx-louv1-01x-paradigms-computer-1203)) I read the initial parts of the book: "Concepts, Techniques, and Models of Computer Programming" (mitpress.mit.edu/books/concepts-techniques-and-models-computer-programming). The initial chapters provide a good approachable way to get started with functional programming. Though working with Oz (the programming language used in the book) gets some time to get used to, this is an excellent book. I am bit surprised that this book is not as well known, and probably I wouldn't have known about this book if not for the MOOC course.
"Concepts, Techniques, and Models of Computer Programming" by Peter Van Roy and Seif Haridi. Also "The Reasoned Schemer", which has the same pedagogical style as the other Schemer books, but works around logic programming. Both of those books are mind benders and I've gotten a lot out of them recently.
