* The Pragmatic Programmer (Read this once every 6 months until it's obvious) * Head first design patterns * Agile Web Development with Rails It's not obvious, but the rails book is a great introduction to test-driven development in general.

Agile Web Development with Rails was one of the better books that were around when I first started learning Ruby/Rails. I don't know that it still has the presence in the community that it first had but I'm sure it is still a great read. http://www.pragprog.com/titles/rails3/agile-web-development-... Getting Real (37 Signals) Programming Ruby (Pragmatic Programmers) Agile Web Development with Rails (Pragmatic Programmers) Javascript: The Definitive Guide (O'Reilly) a good text on database design & normalization, performance issues, and SQL something to teach *nix basics, which I don't have but could have used
