1491 is fantastic. Have you read the sequel, 1493? It's thoroughly enjoyable as well.

Neither are new books, but this year I both read and subsequently gifted * 1491 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1491:_New_Revelations_of_the_A... (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1491:_New_Revelations_of_the_Americas_Before_Columbus) * Stranger in a Strange Land (the "Original, Uncut version") https://www.amazon.com/Stranger-Strange-Land-Robert-Heinlein... 1491: New Revelations of the Americas Before Columbus by Charles C. Mann (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1491:_New_Revelations_of_the_Am... (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1491:_New_Revelations_of_the_Americas_Before_Columbus))
I'm currently reading 1491 by Charles C. Mann, excellent book about the Americas before Columbus and how much of what we have been taught is either incorrect or misinformed. A follow up to this is 1943, what happened in the Americas after the arrival of Columbus. A great pair of books. I'll also say Ishmael by Daniel Quinn and The Story of B are two of my favourite books.
